Keeping warm this winter!

by Sharon Fernando | no comments | Blog

As we find ourselves midway through November, the chilly weather has arrived swiftly, along with rain that’s been battering our streets on and off. It’s time to think about staying warm, not just for ourselves but also for friends, family, and particularly any elderly relatives who are more vulnerable during this time of year.

There are a few simple steps that can make a big difference in keeping cozy this winter:

Boiler Health
First on the list is ensuring your boiler is in top condition. This piece of equipment will do the heavy lifting to keep your home warm. A visit from a Gas Safe Registered Engineer for an annual service can help ensure your boiler runs efficiently and reliably, reducing the chances of unexpected breakdowns.

Stay Active
Moving around throughout the day not only benefits your overall health but also helps your circulation, keeping you warmer. Sitting still for too long can make you feel colder, so keep moving when you can. When seated, elevate your feet, as the floor is often the coldest part of the room.

Rugs and Slippers
Speaking of cold floors, laying down rugs on hard surfaces can trap heat and insulate your feet from the cold. Investing in a good pair of slippers can also save you from that unpleasant early-morning shock of stepping onto cold floors.

Keep the Heat In
To maintain warmth, preventing heat from escaping is crucial. Quick fixes like closing curtains, using draught excluders, and blocking gaps where heat escapes can make a big difference. If possible, consider long-term improvements like loft insulation and double glazing.

Radiator Efficiency
Radiators are key in heating your home, so it’s worth making sure they are running efficiently. Bleeding your radiators to release trapped air is a quick task that can make a big difference in heat output. Also, avoid placing furniture in front of radiators as it blocks the heat from circulating properly around the room.

Radiator Reflectors
Another simple way to improve heating efficiency is by installing radiator reflectors. These reflective panels are placed behind your radiators to bounce heat back into the room, rather than letting it escape through the walls.

Smart Heating Controls
Consider installing smart heating systems or programmable thermostats. These allow you to control the heating schedule in your home, ensuring that rooms are only heated when needed. This not only keeps you warm but also helps you save energy.

Finally, remember to check on family and loved ones, ensuring they’re staying warm and in good spirits. Help them wrap up in layers and keep a steady supply of hot drinks flowing—it’s the small things that make all the difference during the winter months.

Stay warm, stay safe, and make sure to spread the warmth this winter!
